Last week there was news of Steam Forum (an online gaming forum) going offline for site maintenance. Even though Valve Corporation, the owner of this gaming forum, did not admit that there was a security breach, there were enough speculations to believe that the gaming site was hacked. Online gamers even saw a suspicious message from a group claiming to be fkn0wned.

But now even Steam administrators have admitted that the online game platform was hacked. After the hack, Steam forum has become a place for discussing gaming cracks. Some users claim that they have even started receiving spam e-mails promoting the site fkn0wned.com.

Valve Corporation admits hacking of its Steam Forum

Steam – developed by Valve Corporation is now claiming that the hack might have exposed sensitive information of its customers. Information such as encrypted credit card details, passwords, e-mail address, billing addresses, etc. might have been stolen by the hackers. Till now, there has been no report on misuse of customer information. But the company has warned users to change their online passwords and keep records of all their bank transactions.

Steam has more than 1,400 games and it is calculated that there are more than 35 million active users. As of now, nothing is clear about the exact numbers of users affected, but it is expected to be in millions.

Skyrim – the fifth edition of Elder Scrolls series developed by Bethesda Game Studio, was released on the same day when Steam was hacked. To play and unlock the game, users needed the online services of Steam. Since Steam was offline, it could have delayed the launch of Skyrim, but the online gaming website was live just in time for the launch of the new game. So, users were able to play and unlock their game successfully.

The question that arises now in the mind of Steam users is, were their account details stolen by hackers? If so, how many users were affected?

Gabe Logan Newell, co-founder and managing director of Valve Corporation has also advised the users of Steam gaming forum to change their account details and passwords. He also apologized for the inconvenience caused.
