Luis Mijangos, 32, of Santa Ana, has been sentenced to 6 years of imprisonment for hacking computers belonging to women and teenage girls where he found sexually explicit photos and threatening to put them online unless they provided him with more.
Mijangos sent malicious software as popular songs or videos to the user’s computer and unknowingly these were circulated by those women and young girls to their families and friends. In all, he had an access to more than 100 computers.
After gaining access to their computers, he read the mails and conversations, watched them through their webcams and the most damaging one was access to their nude photographs which those women and girls have taken of themselves. Mijangos then threatened to post the images online unless his victims were willing to provide more racy photos or videos to him or if they went to police. Many times, he also posed as victims’ boyfriends to convince them to send him their nude pictures.
In one of the cases, Mijangos actually posted one victim’s nude photo on her friend’s MySpace page.
Mijangos pleaded guilty of computer hacking and wiretapping. When the sentence was handed over to him, he had tears welling up his eyes. Earlier, he apologized for what he had done.
Authorities believe this is one of the more unusual cases because Mijangos wasn’t interested in getting money. He was motivated by sex.
One of his victims, a 35 year old woman said that Milangos haunts her every time she uses the computer. She also added that she no longer trusts anyone and will not pay her bills online or have conversations online.
It is to be noted that 44 of Mijangos victims were Juveniles.
