Fortinet, a leading network security provider, has released its “Threat Landscape” report, according to which two prominent detections of TDSS family of rootkits are capable of infecting 64-bit Windows operating systems. These rootkits gain complete access of any computer that they infect, and subsequently take over the activities of administrators and end users. These TDSS rootkits are also difficult to identify and remove. Malicious websites lead to the spread of these rootkits.
Derek Manky, senior security strategist at Fortinet said “Microsoft issued a security advisory in mid-April to fix vulnerability with driver signing enforcement that the TDSS family of rootkits have been known to exploit”. He further said that since TDSS is still active and potent, they recommend applying critical update if a user is running an affected x64 edition of Microsoft Windows.
People using FortiGuard Services from Fortinet are protected against these rootkits.
