Is cloud computing the answer to check serious cyber attacks? It definitely can be, when the United States’ Military Cyber Command is backing up this technology as an cost effective way to protect major IT resources.
General Keith Alexander, commander of the US Cyber Command and director of NSA, spoke about benefits of cloud computing in the military system before 700 attendees from various fields of security at the DARPA Cyber Colloquium. He sees the cloud structure not only as a cost effective solution for system administration but also found it as an easier way to secure it. Alexander said, “We can argue over merits of cloud structure but we have found that it is easier to secure the cloud.”

Alexander discussed the importance of having a single defensible system to guard against cyber threats. The global economy is bearing the brunt of total cost of cyber crime at an estimated US$ 1 trillion, with malware being produced at a rate of 55,000 a day. It can ruin a country’s economy, when the cost of security is so high, with alarming records of theft of intellectual property stolen at the largest rates in history. Therefore, he called in for a need to have better defensible architectures and change the way military thinks about defending their systems.
Cloud computing can be the solution to this major global problem as it helps to build the notion of a single defensible system by removing all the irregularities and organizing computing ‘enclaves’. He cited the example of cost cutting of their system administration by 50 per cent and the reduction of number of help desks from 900 to two with cloud computing. Therefore, this organized form of cloud structure can be the answer to fix all the vulnerabilities that the US military is currently facing.
If the US military believes in the potentiality of Cloud Computing to check cyber threats, then this is a new revelation to the benefits of having cloud environment in organizations to protect their assets against serious cyber attacks.
