Unwanted e-mail messages to people on your network has become the modern day technological trouble. It’s mainly an annoyance, but also a dangerous security risk that creates an entry point for viruses and other online threats on your network. It also consumes bandwidth and server space, but it also decreases daily productivity due to required, daily user maintenance which results in loss of time and money.

Spam seems to randomly show up in your email inbox and there are a lot of common things that internet users do that get their email addresses added to email spam lists. Since spam lists are traded and sold regularly, once your name is in one spam list, you will soon be on other lists.

Controlling spam is a growing and difficult task for many organizations. To reduce the risk of a spam attack, it should be blocked before it even hits your network.

Here are some options to protect your network from spam attack.

  • Install a Corporate Spam Filter
  • Contract with a Third Party Organization
  • Install a separate spam filtering software

Install a Corporate Spam Filter:

The first method for an organization to block spam is to install a corporate spam filter. A corporate spam filter is installed and configured on the receiving email server. Corporate spam filter can be installed with the SMTP server or the POP3 server.

The SMTP protocol is for sending email SMTP and is the most easiest method for installing a spam filter. The SMTP filter examines incoming email messages and then passes them on to the SMTP server.

The POP3 protocol is for retrieve email messages. When a spam filter is installed on the POP3 server, email messages must still go through the SMTP server for examination process.

Contract with a Third Party Organization:

The second method to stop spam is to contract with a third party organization. This method will direct all email messages to the third party’s spam filter. Unwanted mails are deleted and the clean and safe mails are redirected to the organization’s recipient.

Install a separate spam filtering software:

Another method is to install a separate spam filtering software. The software works with the email client installed on your system to eliminate junk mail. This software may need to be configured to detect and block unsolicited messages.
